Yoga is growing increasingly popular worldwide, including in New Zealand. Yogathon 2012 aims to see New Zealanders complete 108,000 ‘Surya Namaskar’(a sequence of yoga postures) as a nation. Surya Namaskar integrates simple Yoga postures of well-balanced movements linked dynamically with easy breathing technique, and provides immense health benefits to both body and mind.Some benefits include improvement in the digestive system, strengthening abdominal muscles, improving lung function and oxygenating the blood, improving muscle flexibility, and keeping the body flexible.It can also help in improving memory and promoting better sleep.

Yogathon New Zealand, a division of Hindu Council of New Zealand, will hold nationwide ‘Health for Humanity’ Yogathon from 16th to 30th September 2012. Yoga is growing increasingly popular worldwide, including in New Zealand. Yogathon 2012 aims to see New Zealanders complete 108,000 ‘Surya Namaskar’(a sequence of yoga postures) as a nation. Surya Namaskar integrates simple Yoga postures of well-balanced movements linked dynamically with easy breathing technique, and provides immense health benefits to both body and mind. “Health for Humanity’ Yogathon inspires many Kiwis “Health for Humanity’ Yogathon inspires many Kiwis

  New Zealand cities witnessed a unique health event from 13th to 27th of August 2011. People from all walks of life and different age groups participated in a two-week “Health for Humanity” Yogathon. The youngest participant was 3 year old in Wellington and the oldest was 82 years old from Auckland. The event was free and open to all to participate. The participants aimed to collectively perform 100,000 repetitions of ‘Surya Namaskar’ (Sun Salutation) over a period of 15 days. A repetition of Surya Namaskar consists of a series of yoga postures of well-balanced movements linked with simple breathing technique. The final tally was 89,058. Mr Venkat Koppaka, the national coordinator for Yogathon, said it was indeed a great achievement considering this event was happening for the first time in New Zealand. Yogathon 2011 was launched simultaneously in Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Wellington and Nelson. New Zealand witnessed the start of a unique “Health for Humanity” Yogathon 2011 on the 13th of August 2011 in a number of cities. The event is free of cost and open to all! Over a period of 15 days, the event participants across New Zealand aim to collectively perform 100,000 repetitions of ‘Surya Namaskar’ (Sun Salutation). The repetitions can be done under available trainers in a group, or from the comfort of the participant’s home, and the count communicated to the coordinators before the end of the Yogathon fortnight (details of website below). A repetition of Surya Namaskar consists of a series of simple yoga postures of well-balanced movements linked with simple breathing technique. Yogathon 2011 launch was marked by coordinated formal opening ceremonies in Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, and Wellington. In Auckland, the launch was held in the suburbs of  Henderson, Mount Eden, North Shore and Flat Bush.
