25,000 Surya Namaskar completed at midway Yogathon 2013

Midway through Yogathon has already gone, we have completed 25 000 plus Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations). Congratulations and well done to each participant. Your contribution is invaluable and the team hopes that you are reaping the health benefits of Surya Namaskar.We also express heartfelt appreciation to the number of organisations and groups that have registered this year.

Art of Living New Zealand has been part of Yogathon project since it began. In 2011, Art of Living completed over 11000 sun salutations in 2011, last year, they completed approximately 8 700 sun salutations and for Yogathon 2013 the team at Art of Living is progressing steadily under guidance and leadership of Art of Living teachers: Mr Hemant Parikh, Ms Rozeena Parikh, Ms Olinka Goel, Ms Meena Satishkumar and Mr Krishna Parmar. Art of Living provides weekly yoga sessions in Auckland. EveryMonday, at Glenfield community centre, 6.30 – 7.30 pm and every Tuesday at 1484 Dominion Road, 6.30 – 7.30 pm.

Similarly, Yogi Divine Society (YDS), a not for profit community organisation that focuses on youth development and building a society without addiction are first time participants to Yogathon. The team conducts weekly youth activities. Tuesdays at Freemans bay Community centre, 8.30 – 10.00pm, Saturdays at Sandringham Community Centre 8.30 – 10.00 pm and Sunday cricket at Victoria park cricket ground from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm. YDS create a fun atmosphere for young people’s spiritual, mental and physical development and the team is enthusiastically completing sun salutations that contribute to participants development.

Several organisations have registered with Yogathon for the first time this year. The Mahatma Gandhi Centre Health and Fitness Group, coordinated by Ms Ella Kumar, are participating for the first time and at midway, completed 360 Surya Namaskar. The Group meets at Mahatma Gandhi Centre every Monday at 7.00 pm and every Saturday at 7.30 am for health and wellness sessions. The group also organizes monthly walks.

Art of Living, Yogi Divine Society and the Mahatma Gandhi Fitness Centre conduct their activities purely to provide sewa (service) to the community. Learning Sun salutations during Yogathon, at these centre is free of charge.We have aimed at achieving a grand total of 108,000 repetitions of ‘Surya Namaskar’ (Sun Salutations) and this is only possible with collective efforts of all individuals/Groups registered for Yogathon -2013.
