F.A.Q

Welcome to Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Yogathon?
Yogathon is a 2 weeks long national event, organised by Yogathon New Zealand. It aims to create awareness about Yoga and its health benefits. The event is open and free for all. The activity focus of the 2 weeks is Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations). Participants are able to obtain free information and in some cases free introduction to Surya Namaskars (sun salutations), which are a series of Yoga postures.
Participants keep a record of their daily repetitions of Surya Namaskars for this period. The aim of Yogathon NZ (2016) is to together attain a total of 108,000 repetitions or Surya Namaskars for all the participants combined over this period.
Yogathon New Zealand acknowledges various schools of yoga that have helped to increase awareness of Yoga. By providing a nation-wide collaborative platform to them, Yogathon New Zealand also disseminates information awareness about the many schools and styles of Yoga.

2. Why Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations)?

Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) is a sequence of yoga postures. For people with limited time, say in the morning rush to get to work, this gives you a full body workout in a short period of time. A sequence of Surya Namaskar flexes every part of the body. If done at a faster pace, it is equivalent to a cardiovascular workout.

The benefits of Surya Namaskar increase if the sequence is synchronised with your breathing.

3. Who can participate?
Any member of general public can participate. Yogathon is open to individuals of all ages and abilities. It is advisable to practice under the guidance of a certified trainer if you are a beginner. We recommend that if you have any questions about your medical conditions, a medical professional/ Yoga trainer should be consulted before starting on Surya Namaskars.
